The material called, “Spiny Oyster,” used by Native American artists to make inlays in fine jewelry, comes from the shell of the bivalve mollusk, Spondylus varius, as the name implies, Spiny Oysters are covered with menacing spines. Spiny Oyster shells are unique, beautiful, and also difficult-to-harvest.
The Navajos, like many other cultures, also associated the blue or blue-green color of turquoise with the sky, water, and earth. It was an important mechanism to attain closer contact with all of these elements, and a turquoise stick aided in the search for water, in the Navajo’s arid land.
